As Managing Director at AbacusBio, Neville works with the team to build the business around the core focus of bridging science and business.

Neville’s areas of expertise include:

  • measurement of body composition in live animals - ultrasound and CT scanning
  • carcass classification
  • integration of carcass traits into livestock breeding programmes

Neville completed a BAgSci (Hons) at Lincoln College before commencing a PhD on seasonality in Red and Fallow deer at the University of New England in Australia. He then worked at the Norwegian Agricultural University as a post-doctoral fellow, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship and then scientist position at AgResearch, Invermay. During this time, Neville established and managed a CT scanning facility at Invermay, researched the economic benefits of using CT measurements in sheep breeding programmes, discriminating among animals for improved rewards from traditional meat cuts, lamb and ewe performance of cross- vs pure-breds, backfat depth selection, underlying genetics of rib-eye muscling and the optimal use of genetic resources in aquaculture.

Neville joined AbacusBio in 2001 and continues to work in the areas of imaging technologies, in vivo estimation of body composition, scanning technologies including ultrasound, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and computed tomography (CT) scanning. In addition to this Neville is involved in carcass classification, livestock breeding programmes and trait selection as well as performing statistical and economic modeling of technology applications. It is his ability to look at the overall picture whilst focusing on the details that allows him to fulfil a broad range of client needs.

Neville has received a number of awards and invitations to speak over the years and is a member of the Royal Society of New Zealand, New Zealand Society of Animal Production (past vice president and past president) and the Association for Advancement of Animal Breeding and Genetics (past proceedings editor).
