Mark Oliver

Mark gets an enormous amount of satisfaction from improving clients businesses and business practices by fitting the effective information technology tools.

Mark’s area of expertise are

  • business analysis
  • software development

Mark has had a varied career as kitchen hand, bar person and in retail sales before finding the “information highway” and indicating onto the fast lane. Mark completed a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) in 2001 and has been working for Dunedin software development companies since that time. After completing his degree, Mark worked for a Dunedin software development company for 4 years, where he helped develop a semi-automated web based advertising system with a focus on real-estate. During this time Mark’s roles progressed from junior developer to software manager as the company pushed ahead.

In late 2005 Mark joined AbacusBio and discovered that there was uncharted territory and unlimited potential in farming and animal technology for IT. Since joining AbacusBio, Mark has enjoyed the variety of work that has crossed his desk along with the opportunity to work with world leaders in the field of animal genetics. At AbacusBio Mark has had the opportunity to gain experience working for local bodies and business on farming and non farming related IT projects. Understanding a clients business is one of Mark’s passions and he gets an enormous amount of satisfaction in providing clients with solutions that increase productivity and decrease churn.

Some of Marks interests include growing veggies, watching movies and whitebaiting.

Mark Bennett

Mark enjoys the challenge of integrating different technologies to develop software to provide optimal solutions for clients.

Mark’s specialty areas include:

  • Software architecture and development
  • Database development and design

Mark grew up on his parents' sheep and crop farm in Ashburton.  Later he moved to Milton with his family to farm sheep and dairy grazing in the winter.  While at high school he gained a keen interest in technology and decided to take it as a career path, graduating Otago Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Information Technology.  During his time at Otago Polytechnic, Mark gained skills in software development, learning a number of programming languages and the technologies involved in the area of computers.

Mark joined AbacusBio in October 2009 while he was studying.  As an intern working on the hoofprint project,  he specialised in data importing and exporting and after graduating he became a junior developer for AbacusBio.  The work he does at AbacusBio links his farming background with his passion for technology.

Outside of work, Mark likes to get outdoors going on motorbike rides, hunting and fishing, but is also big on movies and games.

Josh Lowry

Josh has a keen interest in how software is used, ensuring products are user-friendly while still technically sound

Josh’s areas of expertise include:

  • Software database design and development using Microsoft technologies
  • User interaction and interface design
  • Development of reporting solutions

Josh has had a keen interest in software development since discovering programming while at high school.  Determined to pursue this as a career, Josh began working toward his Bachelor of Information Technology in 2007.  This provided him with a range of skills in the IT field, including design and implementation of databases and software.  The degree culminated in an industry standard project for a Dunedin client, where he built software to centralise several years of agricultural data; providing reports and business intelligence via an end-user application.

Josh joined AbacusBio in late 2009 as an intern, assisting with development of the hoofprint project; an online tool for the reporting and benchmarking of on-farm carbon emissions.  Upon completion of his degree, Josh became a permanent member of staff.  He specialises in the architecture and implementation of interfaces and reporting solutions.

Josh enjoys hunting, fishing and watching movies in his spare time, and is actively involved in Camp Quality, a voluntary organisation providing camps for children who have been affected by cancer.
