Anna Campbell

Anna brings enthusiasm, innovation and strong communication skills to the AbacusBio team in the areas of genetics, sustainability and technology.

Anna’s specialty areas include:

  • livestock and cereal genetics
  • meat quality
  • meat yield
  • environmental sustainability within agriculture
  • extension and communication of agricultural science
  • public speaking focusing on communication of science and technology.

Anna completed a BSc (Honours) degree in Botany at the University of Otago before embarking on a PhD in cereal breeding and genetics at Lincoln University and Crop & Food Research. After completing a PhD, Anna worked in the heart of the “wheat belt of Australia” for the University of Southern Queensland. Here she discovered DNA markers for wheat quality and disease resistance traits. In a move from noodle colour to meat colour, Anna moved back to New Zealand in 2001 to work as a scientist at AgResearch, Invermay. At AgResearch Anna ran DNA marker discovery and validation programmes in sheep meat quality and yield.

Anna joined AbacusBio in 2007 to further her passion for being involved in direct application of science to agricultural businesses. Her background in both sheep and wheat genetics has included DNA marker discovery and determining optimal marker application in breeding programmes. This gives her a strong understanding of both the science behind such technologies and their application to a broad range of industries. At AbacusBio Anna works to assist clients in the uptake of new technologies. She believes one of the most important aspects to this is clear communication of tricky concepts in an understandable and interesting way to encourage industry adoption of new technologies.

It is this passion for clear communication that saw Anna become the New Zealand Toastmaster champion in 2006. She has been invited to speak at international conferences and has written and contributed to many publications. In addition, Anna is currently working towards a business qualification through the University of Otago business executive education program to assist in bridging the gap between science and business.

It is this enthusiasm, innovation and clear communication that Anna applies to help you reach your science and agribusiness goals.

Jude Sise

Jude brings her penchant for trouble shooting, analytical skills and practicality to the AbacusBio team in the areas of genetics, modeling and software development.

Jude’s specialty areas include:

  • practical application of DNA based tests in the livestock industry
  • modeling cost effectiveness of applying new technologies to industry
  • software development
  • commercial test development
  • genetic technology feasibility studies

Born and bred in Dunedin, Jude originally trained as a Medical Technologist, specialising in clinical biochemistry. She worked in clinical biochemistry laboratories in both Dunedin and Christchurch hospitals before completing a Masters of Applied Science (1st class honours) in animal biochemistry at the Lincoln University. She then took a research associate position at AgResearch and subsequently progressed to scientist level. Here Jude led the commercialisation of gene technologies, which included development of DNA pedigree and breeding value analysis software and the development of an advanced elk red deer hybrid test currently used in North America and New Zealand.

Jude joined AbacusBio in 2007 and is particularly interested in the practical application of DNA based tests in the livestock industry. She has been performing cost/benefit analyses around the use of tests currently available in NZ, developing client based services (such as the Abacus Accelerator) and examining the potential for SNP technologies to detect common faults in sheep. Jude has published these results, along with a number of other publications. Jude also won the 2008 New Zealand Society of Animal Production Innovation Award with her work in this area.

In her spare time, Jude enjoys skiing, supporting youth sailing in Otago, swimming at Lake Benmore and chilling out with a great book when time permits.
